I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.
If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
My father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit.
- John 15 -
When we hear the challenge to start living Life on a Mission, it's incredibly tempting to make a list of ways we can be "missional" in our community and around the world - an action list. But I think we would be remiss if we jumped into action without first sitting at His feet and doing a little abiding. Actually, I think we need to do a lot of abiding.
Now the question is: What the heck is abiding? Other translations of the Bible use the word "remain." One the definitions for Abide in the dictionary is to "stay or live somewhere" and I love that! To abide in Christ is to live in His presence!
How do we do that?
- I think an obvious answer is to be reading and meditating on His word. While it may seem obvious, many of us struggle to do this regularly (hand raised over here!)
Here are some great tools to help you get in the word:
She Reads Truth is an online devotion (and app!) that I use regularly. It's a community of women (sorry guys, you can still read along!) who are doing this thing together. They offer at home study packs or you can do it completely online/with your own journal. The women behind this community are solid, as is there teaching.
The Abide Journal is just one of the beautiful devotional books created by Naptime Diaries. Be sure to also check out her Advent journal and cards!
- Notice Him. Actively seek Him and praise Him for His presence and evidence all around you.
God spoke to me this morning as I took my dog for a walk (I've recently been told that you're supposed to do that. Rookie mistake.) All throughout my neighborhood are some pretty interesting houses. I live in a very mixed culture with a heavy Spanish influence. The houses here are colorful and unique, covered in Mexican tile and the yards are decorated with aloe plants that are taller than I am. I even have a neighbor with a fairy swing hanging from her tree.
I really want to try it out.
But then I began to notice how unique and beautiful the flowers and plants were as well. Just like the quirky homes, there were flowers of many colors and trees with long over-arching branches, bushes with leaves so tiny I couldn't think of something to compare them too... and God said, notice. Notice my workmanship. Notice my creativity. Notice my creation.
These are just two ways of abiding that God has been speaking to me recently. What are some ways you practice abiding in Christ? I'd love to hear in the comments section.
